Upwork's 2026 Fee Structure Explained
The Upwork service fee — the percentage Upwork deducts from your earnings — changed on May 1, 2025, replacing the old lifetime-billings-per-client tier system with a simpler variable fee per contract. Here's how the current system works:
| Fee rate | Who pays this | How it's determined |
|---|---|---|
| 0–15% | Standard marketplace freelancers | Set by Upwork's algorithm per contract. Shown before you accept. Fixed for the life of the contract. |
| ~10% Most common | Majority of freelancers | Typical rate for most contract types. Varies by supply/demand and project category. |
| 0% | Freelancer Plus members (Direct Contracts only) | When you bring your own client to Upwork via Direct Contract. Requires $19.99/mo Plus plan. |
| 3–5% | Clients on Basic plan | Client-side Marketplace Fee. Doesn't reduce your earnings — it's additional cost for the client. |
| 8–10% | Clients on Business Plus | Higher client fee for Business Plus plan clients. |
What happened to the old 20% / 10% / 5% tiers?
The old system charged 20% on your first $500 with each client, 10% on $500–$10,000, and 5% above $10,000. It was replaced in May 2025. If you're reading outdated articles describing the old structure, they're no longer accurate.
The new variable system is simpler but less transparent — you don't know your rate until you see a specific offer. Most freelancers report seeing 10% on the majority of contracts, though rates can vary.
How to Reduce Your Upwork Fees
-
Check your rate before accepting. Your fee percentage is shown on every offer before you accept. Compare rates across different client offers — a $50/hr contract at 5% beats a $55/hr contract at 15% for net take-home.
-
Use Direct Contracts for your own clients. If you have clients who found you outside Upwork, bring them in via Direct Contract. With Freelancer Plus ($19.99/mo), Direct Contracts carry a 0% fee.
-
Factor fees into your bid. If you want to take home $100 at a 10% fee, bid $111.11 — not $100. Use the Reverse Calculator tab above to get your exact bid amount for any target income.
-
Track your effective rate over time. Your Billings and Earnings Report in Upwork shows fees broken out. Calculate your actual average rate across all contracts — it might be lower than you think if you have some 0–5% contracts in the mix.
-
Build your Upwork reputation first. Higher Job Success Scores and more reviews may give Upwork's algorithm reason to offer you lower fee rates over time, though Upwork doesn't officially confirm this relationship.
